Liquid Crystal Materials Scientist

Looking for a talented and self-motivated engineer to help produce our revolutionary liquid crystal-based electro-optic patterning devices. This is a great opportunity to grow with the company and establish the methods and procedures that will be in place as we scale to production. Liquid crystal, chemistry, and Optics backgrounds preferred with a strong formal background in the processing, development, testing of liquid crystal for electro-optical applications. The role involves all aspects of characterization of an electro optic device from incoming raw materials to system validation, as well as leading the continuous improvement cycle. The ideal candidate combines practical hands-on experience in liquid crystal formulation, characterization, quality control and continuous improvement focus. We need someone with strong a background in electro-optics and liquid crystals, who will accelerate our path to process controls and KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) that can be tracked and monitored.

What You Will Do

  • Experience with processing, development, testing of liquid crystal for electro-optical applications.
  • Experience with liquid crystal formulation, purification, and characterization and quality control practices; quality and continuous improvement focus.
  • Demonstrated success with improvement cycle: from root cause analysis to corrective action.
  • Experience with optics technologies including imaging, illumination, physical optics, radiometry and photometry.
  • Experience with optical microscopy & thin film characterization.
  • Experience with electrical characterization: impedance analyzers or IV Curve Tracers.
  • Experience with signal generation & measurement: time & frequency domain characterization.
  • Familiarity with optical materials and coatings as well as their manufacturing techniques.
  • Highly organized with attention to detail.
  • Effective communication, both verbal and written.
  • Must be able to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

What You Bring

  • Masters or PhD. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, EE, Physics, Optics, Materials Science.
  • BS with 5+ years of experience in related fields.

Experience Preferred, Not Required

  • Setting up analytical labs, chromatography, fractionation, purification.
  • Spectroscopy.
  • Went bench chemistry and synthesis.
  • Experience managing growth.
  • Experience developing KPIs for complex early-stage systems.
  • Opto-mechanical and electronic device testing, especially test automation and data analysis.
  • Cleanroom operation & contamination control.
  • LCD (liquid crystal display) manufacturing, processing, formulation.
  • Optical Materials & Coating design & manufacturing.
  • Design of diagnostic optical fixtures, Optics concepts (esp polarization).
  • Thin Film Metrology: especially model-fitting techniques eg Spectral Reflectance.
  • Polarization, petrology, and Nomarski DIC (Differential interference contrast) microscopy.
