Modern Animal
Make a Real-World Impact at Modern Animal
Modern Animal is re-imagining veterinary care through technology, thoughtful design, and a culture rooted in empathy—for pets, the people who love them, and the people who care for them. Our Office team unites designers, engineers, operators, and strategists to solve big problems and build a new kind of veterinary experience. You’ll never believe this, but we’re a dog-friendly workplace—today that means your living room; someday we look forward to meeting all the quarantine puppies in person.
About the Role
As Modern Animal’s IT Manager, you’ll own the full lifecycle of hardware, networks, and clinic-side tech that power our expanding footprint of clinics and support teams. From laptop procurement to smart-door access logs, you’ll make sure every Modern Animal human has the tools—and Wi-Fi—they need to care for our members and their pets.
What You’ll Do
- Onboarding & Offboarding
- Provision roughly 50 new-hire laptops per year in partnership with People Ops, including budget tracking and approval workflows.
- Streamline offboarding, advise on reuse-versus-recycle policies, and document hardware return exceptions.
- Clinic Security & IoT
- Own specifications and vendor relationships for alarms, cameras, radios, and smart doors.
- Coordinate incident log pulls and ensure continuous coverage across 40-plus clinics.
- New Clinic Openings & Closings
- Stand up (or decommission) internet, Ubiquiti Wi-Fi, printers, and point-of-care devices.
- Manage contractors during build-outs; collaborate with Development and Engineering on any prototype changes.
- Run-Time Support
- Lead Tier-2 triage for internet, Wi-Fi, and printer outages; maintain runbooks, SLAs, and redundancy plans.
- Cultivate regional managed-service providers for faster response times.
- Access Governance & Audits
- Conduct annual Slack, Google Workspace, and Notion access reviews; automate offboarding checks to close gaps.
- Vendor & Budget Management
- Negotiate CDW and Amazon pricing, track cap-ex vs. op-ex, and surface insights to Finance and Clinic Leadership.
- Process & Policy
- Establish hardware standards, approval matrices, and inventory controls; document everything in Notion for transparency.
Who You Are
- Builder-operator. You can image laptops one hour and draft a three-year IT roadmap the next.
- Clinic-minded. You design solutions that work for distributed, client-facing teams—not just HQ.
- Security-first. You’re comfortable with SOC 2 or HIPAA-adjacent best practices, MDM, and SSO.
- Data-driven. You track MTTR, asset depreciation, and cost per hire—and turn numbers into process improvements.
- Inclusive & empathetic. You lead with humility, champion a diverse workplace, and share our love for animals.
Requirements & Qualifications
- 7+ years in corporate or field IT, supporting mixed Mac/Windows environments and cloud SaaS tooling.
- 2+ years leading an IT function, project team, or managed-service provider relationship.
- Demonstrated success opening or supporting multi-site, customer-facing locations (retail, clinics, hospitality, etc.).
- Hands-on experience with Google Workspace, MDM (e.g., Kandji, Jamf, Intune), SSO (Okta or Google), and network gear such as Ubiquiti UniFi.
- Familiarity with SOC 2, HIPAA, or PCI controls and annual access-review processes.
- Proven ability to manage hardware budgets, vendor contracts, and cap-ex/op-ex forecasting.
- Comfort troubleshooting printers, VoIP, Wi-Fi, and ISP issues at scale.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to translate tech jargon for non-technical partners.
- Willing to travel both within Los Angeles and the greater US
- Nice to have: experience in healthcare or veterinary environments and a genuine love for animals.
Benefits & Perks
- Flexible Time Off and Paid Parental Leave
- Excellent Medical, Vision & Dental coverage
- 401(k) with company match
- Complimentary Modern Animal Membership for your own pets
- Equity grants for Office-team employees
