About the role

We’re hiring a full-time Optimization & Machine Learning Engineer to join our fast-growing team in Helsinki!

You’ll contribute to one of Intergrid’s key scaling challenges: setting up, fine tuning and maintaining a scalable optimization engine that reliably performs across hundreds of industrial sites, even when conditions are complex and change fast. In this role, you’ll help build and improve the optimization models and ML/AI-driven components that power our Autopilot’s real-time decision-making layer. You’ll collaborate closely with our engineers and domain experts to make optimal decisions in a real-world industrial setting.

The energy transition is creating a once-in-a-generation wave of sites going hybrid, and Intergrid offers an Autopilot to manage this complexity. In this role, you will be working on further developing our optimization models, which make real-time decisions surrounded by complex constraints and a volatile operating environment. The problem is deep and unrelenting: you will need to dive into decision-making under uncertainty, forecasting, and multi-market optimization, all in real-time!

Therefore, this role is a great opportunity for future builders with a strong mathematical background and proven problem-solving skills, who are curious to apply this knowledge to optimize industrial energy operations.

Key responsibilities

• Model real-world industrial energy operationsinto clear, usable mathematical/algorithmic formulations.

• Build, evaluate, and maintain ML/AI/optimization components that improve decision-making

• Work closely with the team to iterate on assumptions, data inputs, and system constraints — and turn them into production-ready solutions.

• Use AI tools effectively to accelerate development while applying strong mathematical judgment (AI is a helper, not a replacement for reasoning).

Who we are looking for

• Strong mathematical foundation: You think precisely about systems, constraints, and trade-offs.

• Applied modeling background: Education or experience in applied mathematics, systems science, machine learning, applied physics, or a closely related field.

• Real-world problem solver: You can turn messy real-world processes into clear mathematical/algorithmic formulations, and iterate when reality disagrees.

• AI-native: You use modern AI tools to accelerate your workflow, while applying your own strong judgment.

• Curiosity-driven mindset: Interest in understanding dynamic systems (e.g., weather, logistics, the energy system) or similar domains.

• Fluent in English: With the ability to tailor communication to your audience.

• Interest in industrial or operational processes and quantifying real-world systems.

• Understanding of cause–effect relationships in e.g. energy or financial markets

Technical interview (120 min)

Meet all our founders and dive into our strategy, culture and future plans. Ask all your toughest questions.

'Work with us' afternoon (4 hours)

We invite you to work with the Intergrid team for a half day to ensure our ways of working align with your aspirations. It is a significant commitment on both sides; thus we only move to this stage if we really want to work with you. It's designed to help both sides make the right decision, and especially giving you a transparent opportunity to decide on a new career chapter. You will receive compensation for this.
