Howie is hiring a backend engineer to join our small, product-focused team in Seattle. We’re building the modern secretary: an AI that schedules, briefs, and coordinates with the same speed and care as a human. Howie already runs the calendars of busy founders, executives, and teams, and we’re growing quickly.

You’ll be responsible for building and scaling the backend systems that power Howie’s AI assistant. From core scheduling logic to integrations with external APIs and LLMs.

What you’ll do

• Design and scale backend services that orchestrate scheduling, email, and API integrations.
  

• Build interfaces between backend systems, LLMs, and user-facing clients.
  

• Develop internal trainer and operations tooling to power our human-in-the-loop workflows.
  

• Contribute to architecture decisions and help shape Howie’s technical direction.
  

What we’re looking for

• Strong experience with TypeScript (strict mode).
  

• Deep understanding of backend fundamentals: concurrency, async jobs, databases, and APIs.
  

• Experience designing and maintaining scalable distributed systems.
  

• 5+ years engineering experience, ideally in startups.
  

• Strong communication skills and ability to move quickly with independence.

• Experience with LLMs or your own AI projects.
  

• Based in Seattle, WA or willing to relocate (we’re in Fremont)
