Role: Environmental Compliance Specialist, EMEA

Summary:

The EMEA Environmental Compliance Specialist (ECS) is responsible for owning operational environmental and regulatory compliance and permitting for EdgeConneX Data Centers in the EMEA region. This role provides hands-on compliance support for operating and expanding facilities, including the interpretation of EU environmental directives, national permitting regimes, and site-specific permit conditions. The ECS works closely with operations, engineering, construction, and external regulators to ensure environmental requirements are integrated into and adhered to in day-to-day operations and project execution. This role is not entry level and requires prior experience applying European environmental regulations in an operational environment.

The ECS must possess excellent communication skills, extensive knowledge of environmental regulations, including sustainability regulations, and experience in risk analysis and team collaboration for complex and technical projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee compliance with environmental regulations and EdgeConneX policy across EMEA locations
  • Lead and support the implementation of regional environmental compliance and management programs for operating facilities
  • Serve as the primary contact for regulatory agency engagement, environmental permitting, permit modifications, and compliance demonstrations of operational facilities
  • Ensure environmental compliance work by contractors, consultants, and employees meets applicable standards and permit conditions
  • Conduct thorough and accurate internal environmental audits for continuous improvement
  • Manage environmental risk analyses based on tracking and trending of issues or incidents
  • Build collaborative relationships with stakeholders to identify and manage risks early
  • Submit time-sensitive reports to various governmental agencies
  • Perform thorough and accurate investigations of environmental incidents and associated regulatory reporting, ensuring follow-up on corrective actions
  • Manage regulatory hazardous waste and materials across the EMEA data center operations
  • Ensure necessary inspections (e.g., stormwater, air quality, spill prevention) are completed as required
  • Maintain up-to-date pollution prevention plans, ensuring training and inspections are conducted in compliance with regulations and follow through on corrective actions
  • Exhibit organizational and project management skills through complex tasks involving multiple internal and external parties

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Minimum of 3+ years of experience in environmental compliance, permitting, or regulatory roles within Europe, preferably supporting industrial, energy, infrastructure, or mission-critical facilities
  • Working knowledge of EMEA environmental regulations and frameworks, including but not limited to:
    • Industrial Emissions Directive (IED)
    • Medium Combustion Plant Directive (MCPD)
    • EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS)
    • Waste Framework Directive
    • Water Framework Directive
    • REACH and RoHS
    • Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD)
    • Applicable national and local environmental permitting regimes within the EU and UK/Ireland
  • Ability to interpret documents such as regulations, permits, procedures, contracts, and company rules
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented, capable of working effectively in a team environment
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly and efficiently summarize information and challenges
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Ability to travel 10-20% with a valid driver's license
  • Experience with environmental management systems and/or data analysis
  • Familiarity with sustainability and ESG requirements as they intersect with regulatory compliance
