Senior Software Engineer, Enterprise WordPress
Automattic
WordPress VIP, the enterprise division of Automattic, is the platform for building, maintaining, scaling, and measuring content experiences. Our suite of technologies, services, and integrations combine the ease and flexibility of WordPress with enterprise-grade scalability, security, and data-driven features, to help the largest companies in the world (like Meta, CNN, and Salesforce) build better digital experiences.
We’re looking for talented engineers to help us push the boundaries of what’s possible with WordPress and the web. You’ll play an essential role in designing, building, and evolving products that impact the lives of development and content teams working at some of the most high-profile, high-traffic sites on the web. Our recent projects have explored areas like:
- Content workflows.
- Real-time collaboration.
- Composable architectures.
- Cutting-edge Gutenberg APIs (block bindings, bits, DataViews).
- The intersection of content and AI.
If you have a deep knowledge of WordPress’s internal APIs or the Block Editor (Gutenberg), and love solving interesting problems in a highly collaborative environment, come join us!
Responsibilities
Engineers on the team are involved in every part of the product lifecycle:
- Developing and maintaining enterprise-ready WordPress plugins.
- Discovery work, and writing technical design proposals and documentation.
- Building, debugging, and testing—including writing automated tests and doing manual testing.
- Participating in release planning and roll-outs.
- Measuring impact and iterating.
Additionally, engineers are expected to:
- Implement solutions end-to-end, from the many layers within WordPress (frontend, Gutenberg, wp-admin, drop-ins, etc.) to backend APIs and services and the underlying orchestration system.
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other stakeholders.
- Implement monitoring, alerting, and automation to improve the observability, reliability, and security of our products.
- Perform on-call duties on a rotating basis as part of a globally distributed team, including troubleshooting failed actions and fixing underlying issues in services.
Requirements
- Deep, demonstrable knowledge of modern WordPress development and Gutenberg block development and its internal APIs.
- Skilled in React, PHP, and the WordPress ecosystem.
- Experience working with a large-scale system to make it faster, more scalable, and more fault-tolerant.
- Highly collaborative, with a strong enthusiasm for participating in code reviews and discussions about architecture, technical design, and solving customer problems.
- Knowledgeable about design patterns and testability; experienced with testing frameworks, performance testing, and unit testing is very welcome.
- Customer-focused mindset, with good instincts on product design and user experience.
- Willingness to learn.
Extra credit
- Experience with enterprise-scale WordPress deployments.
- Real-world experience with security: incident response, threat modeling, working on bug bounty programs, hardening systems, etc.
- Skilled in working with data: visualizing data, analyzing data, building data pipelines, Applied AI/ML, etc.
- A history of developing large-scale publishing platforms for major digital media or publishing brands.
- Knowledge of the publishing process and editorial workflows.
- Open source contributions, or contributions to programs designed to help underrepresented people enter the tech field.
