We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer with strong backend expertise and solid full-stack experience to join AlpineAI. In this role, you will build customer integrations and further develop our secure AI platform so that it scales reliably to meet future customer needs in regulated environments.

You will work as part of a small, dedicated engineering team and take ownership of the entire software development lifecycle: from technical design and architectural decisions to implementation, testing, reviews, deployment, and ongoing improvement. This is a full-stack role with a stronger focus on backend engineering.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Integrations

• Design, implement, and maintain customer-specific integrations with AlpineAI’s platform and product ecosystem.
• Translate customer requirements into robust technical solutions, APIs, workflows, and backend services.
• Work closely with product, AI, infrastructure, and customer-facing teams to take integrations from prototype to production.
• Ensure that integrations are secure, maintainable, well-documented, and aligned with customer-specific compliance requirements.

Platform & Backend Engineering

• Build and improve backend services, APIs, data flows, and application logic so that the platform can scale to accommodate future use cases, customers, and operational requirements.
• Contribute to AlpineAI’s microservices architecture, ensuring that services remain intentionally small and focused, and design service boundaries, data contracts, and integration patterns that support long-term maintainability.
• Contribute to frontend features as needed, particularly in React and Vite-based applications.
• Support the deployment, monitoring, and operation of SaaS services in production, and improve system reliability, observability, testability, and developer experience across the entire stack.

Engineering Quality, Ownership, and AI Collaboration

• Take ownership of clean, maintainable, and well-tested solutions across the entire stack, applying pragmatic engineering judgment in a startup environment to balance speed, quality, security, and scalability.
• Participate in technical decision-making, architecture discussions, code reviews, and engineering discussions, and contribute to internal documentation, implementation standards, and reusable engineering patterns.
• Collaborate with AI and product engineers to integrate large language model (LLM)-based capabilities into customer-facing applications, designing backend workflows around AI features such as inference APIs, tool integrations, post-processing, and safety mechanism-related logic.
• Help ensure that AI-powered features are reliable, secure, and user-friendly in regulated customer environments.

What You Bring

Software Engineering Experience

• Several years of professional experience as a senior software engineer.
• Strong expertise in backend engineering combined with solid full-stack experience.
• Experience designing, building, operating, and improving SaaS products in production.
• Ability to take ownership of complex technical problems and deliver practical, production-ready solutions.

Backend & Architecture Skills

• Strong general backend engineering skills that are transferable across languages. Most roles involve some Python, so working proficiency in that language is helpful, but we are not tied to a specific technology stack: our microservices currently span languages such as Python, Java, and Rust, and we are open to others where they align with the problem at hand and the candidate’s strengths.
• Strong understanding of API design, service architecture, data flows, testing, and maintainable backend systems.
• Familiarity with microservices architectures and the trade-offs involved in distributed systems.
• Experience with Docker, CI/CD, observability, and cloud- or data center-based deployment environments is a strong plus.

Front-End & Product Engineering

• Front-end experience with React and Vite.
• Ability to work across the entire technology stack as needed, from backend services to user-facing application features.
• A product-oriented mindset and the ability to translate user and customer needs into practical engineering solutions.

AI / LLM Experience

• Experience with AI- or LLM-based applications is a plus.
• Interest in developing secure, reliable AI products for regulated environments.
• An understanding of AI product patterns—such as inference APIs, retrieval workflows, tool usage, output validation, or guardrails—is beneficial.

Communication & Work Style

• Native or advanced proficiency in German and excellent English skills; knowledge of Swiss German is a plus.
• Clear communication, strong collaboration skills, and a willingness to engage in technical discussions and code reviews.
• Comfortable working in a small, fast-paced startup team with a strong sense of ownership and a hands-on approach.
