Location: Zurich or Davos, Switzerland

Employment level: 100%, hybrid working model

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer with strong backend expertise and solid fullstack experience to join AlpineAI. In this role, you will build customer integrations and further develop our secure AI platform so that it scales reliably for future customer needs in regulated environments.

You will work as part of a small, focused engineering team and take ownership across the full software development lifecycle: from technical design and architecture decisions to implementation, testing, reviews, deployment, and ongoing improvement. The role is fullstack, with a stronger emphasis on backend engineering.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Integrations

  • Design, implement, and maintain customer-specific integrations with AlpineAI’s platform and product ecosystem.
  • Translate customer requirements into robust technical solutions, APIs, workflows, and backend services.
  • Work closely with product, AI, infrastructure, and customer-facing teams to move integrations from prototype to production.
  • Ensure integrations are secure, maintainable, well-documented, and aligned with customer-specific compliance requirements.

Platform & Backend Engineering

  • Build and improve backend services, APIs, data flows, and application logic so the platform scales for future use cases, customers, and operational requirements.
  • Contribute to AlpineAI’s microservices architecture, keeping services intentionally small and focused, and design service boundaries, data contracts, and integration patterns that support long-term maintainability.
  • Contribute to frontend features where needed, particularly in React and Vite-based applications.
  • Support deployment, monitoring, and operation of SaaS services in production, and improve system reliability, observability, testability, and developer experience across the stack.

Engineering Quality, Ownership & AI Collaboration

  • Take ownership of clean, maintainable, and well-tested solutions across the entire stack, applying pragmatic engineering judgement in a startup environment to balance speed, quality, security, and scalability.
  • Participate in technical decision-making, architecture discussions, code reviews, and engineering sparring, and contribute to internal documentation, implementation standards, and reusable engineering patterns.
  • Collaborate with AI and product engineers to integrate LLM-based capabilities into customer-facing applications, designing backend workflows around AI features such as inference APIs, tool integrations, post-processing, and guardrail-related logic.
  • Help ensure AI-powered features are reliable, secure, and usable in regulated customer environments.

What You Bring

Software Engineering Experience

  • Several years of professional experience as a Software Engineer at senior level.
  • Strong backend engineering expertise combined with solid fullstack experience.
  • Experience designing, building, operating, and improving SaaS products in production.
  • Ability to take ownership of complex technical problems and deliver pragmatic, production-ready solutions.

Backend & Architecture Skills

  • Strong general backend engineering skills that transfer across languages. Most roles involve some Python, so working proficiency there is helpful, but we are not tied to a fixed stack: our microservices today span languages such as Python, Java, and Rust, and we are open to others where they fit the problem and the candidate’s strengths.
  • Strong understanding of API design, service architecture, data flows, testing, and maintainable backend systems.
  • Familiarity with microservices architectures and the trade-offs involved in distributed systems.
  • Experience with Docker, CI/CD, observability, and cloud or data-centre-based deployment environments is a strong plus.

Frontend & Product Engineering

  • Frontend experience with React and Vite.
  • Ability to work across the stack when needed, from backend services to user-facing application features.
  • Product-oriented mindset and the ability to turn user and customer needs into practical engineering solutions.

AI / LLM Experience

  • Experience with AI- or LLM-based applications is an advantage.
  • Interest in building secure, reliable AI products for regulated environments.
  • Understanding of AI product patterns such as inference APIs, retrieval workflows, tool usage, output validation, or guardrails is beneficial.

Communication & Working Style

  • Native or proficiency in German and excellent English skills; Swiss German is an advantage.
  • Clear communication, strong collaboration skills, and willingness to engage in technical sparring and code reviews.
  • Comfortable working in a small, fast-moving startup team with high ownership and a hands-on mindset.

What We Are Offering

  • Opportunity to participate in AlpineAI’s company shares program after the initiation period.
  • Dynamic, innovation-driven culture with high autonomy and real product impact.
  • Work on secure AI applications for critical Swiss sectors such as healthcare, public authorities, and higher education.
  • Close collaboration with experts in software engineering, infrastructure, speech, NLP, and applied AI.
  • Exposure to cutting-edge AI technologies while solving real customer problems.
  • Hybrid role based in Zurich or Davos, with an 80–100% workload.

Don’t Apply If

  • You are not willing to work in a hybrid setup connected to Zurich or Davos.
  • You do not have work permission for Switzerland.
  • You are looking for a narrow frontend-only or backend-only role and do not want to work across the stack when needed.
  • You are uncomfortable with startup environments, ambiguity, fast iteration, and high ownership.
